Getting Started: Trace Your Italian Roots

A four-step framework for beginning your ancestry research

Step 1: Interview Elders

Speak with the oldest living relatives. Record names, birthplaces, approximate dates of immigration, and the name of the town they came from in Italy. Every detail matters.

Dual Citizenship Portal

Jure Sanguinis — By Right of Blood

Reclaiming your Italian citizenship through ancestry is one of the most meaningful ways to reconnect with our heritage. Below are the official resources and vetted service providers to guide your journey.

2025/2026 Legal Updates

Policy Alert

Unbroken Line Requirement: Recent legislation has tightened the “unbroken line” requirement for jure sanguinis claims. Applicants must demonstrate that no ancestor in the direct line renounced Italian citizenship before the birth of the next generation. Consulates are now requiring more detailed naturalization records.

Minor Issue Rulings: Italian courts have issued new guidance on the “Minor Issue” (born to a parent who naturalized while the child was under age). Several 2025 court decisions in Rome have narrowed the path for 1948 cases involving female-line descent, making legal representation strongly advisable.
